Met PlayStation Plus lanceerde Sony Computer Entertainment midden 2010 een abonnementsservice. In ruil voor een kleine som kun je onder andere elke maand genieten van een selectie games die speelbaar blijven tot het einde van je abonnement, en kortingen.
In eerste instantie lijkt een systeem waarbij je gratis games weggeeft, niet efficiënt; maar bij ontwikkelaars lijkt de service wel populair. Zo is Thomas Was Alone bedenker Mike Bithell de service zeer dankbaar, dankzij PlayStation Plus is zijn game nu bekender bij een groter publiek wat hem zal helpen met zijn tweede game.
As someone who’s making the difficult second album, I need as many people onside, and knowing what Thomas Was Alone is, and maybe even knowing who I am, so it means something when the trailer comes out and it says ‘From the creator of Thomas Was Alone.’ And that’s what PS Plus was awesome for. It just massively inflated my audience beyond what a normal esoteric indie platformer would have, which is great.
