Al voorafgaand aan de E3 leerden we dat Microsoft met SmartGlass zou komen, waarbij iedere tabletvorm gebruikt kan worden als verlenging van je game. Dat het bedrijf hoog in zet in deze nieuwe technologie blijkt wel na de bespreking van diens toekomstplannen.
In een interview geeft Phil Spencer aan dat iedere toekomstige first-party titel SmartGlass ondersteuning zal krijgen wanneer deze applicatie eenmaal gelanceerd is deze herfst. SmartGlass zal hierbij de Xbox Live Gamertag synchroniseren, waarna deze te gebruiken is bij de diverse games en shows.

Naast het bovenstaande is het mogelijk om SmartGlass te gebruiken om verder te gamen nadat je afstand hebt genomen van je televisie, zoals bijvoorbeeld bij Ascend: New Gods.
Spencer benadrukt dat we niet per game of show steeds in- en uit hoeven te loggen op een aparte applicatie. SmartGlass is één applicatie die altijd verbonden is met je televisie, wat daar ook gaande is. Stel dus dat je Halo speelt, dan weet SmartGlass dit en past hij dit aan. Het is tevens met films mogelijk, zo kun je een film kijken op je tablet en deze vervolgens naar je grote scherm slepen om verder te kijken.

De applicatie ondersteunt Windows 8, Windows Phone en andere (draagbare systemen) als smartphones, PC's en tablets.
