Met Final Fantasy XIII ontwikkelde Square-Enix de eerste Final Fantasy game deze generatie op de Xbox 360 en PlayStation 3. Maar het had ook anders kunnen zijn, de ontwikkeling startte namelijk op de PlayStation 2.
Zo verklaarde Final Fantasy XIII producer Yoshinori Kitase in een interview met de Nederlandse OPM. Hij verteld dat de game origineel bedoeld was als PS2 titel, maar dat ze van systemen moesten veranderen vanwege de komst van de PS3. Dit heeft ze ongeveer anderhalf jaar gekost en was constant een zaak van proberen en corrigeren.

Toch was het niet alleen negatief. Omdat het team zo hard werkte in het begin kwamen ze veel sneller op gang dan verwacht. Hierdoor kon men al beginnen aan de vertalingen en het opnemen van de internationale talen . Hierdoor is het mogelijk dat men zowel de Amerikaanse als de Europese versie al een kleine drie maanden na de Japanse release kan lanceren.
