Treyarch en Infinity Ward zijn al enige tijd de bedrijven achter de Call of Duty titels, er waren enige tijd geleden echter geruchten dat we ook ontwikkelaar Gearbox aan dit rijtje toe konden voegen.
In gesprek met de Dutise website Krawall laat Gearbox president Randy Pitchford weten dat hij echter niet zit te wachten op een Call of Duty in deze huidige tijd. Enkel vanuit twee scenario's had het zin gehad: wanneer Call of Duty een project was die niet had bestaan zonder Gearbox, of wanneer ze een uniek perspectief of nieuwe start aan de game konden geven.

I don’t see that as a real challenge for us. It wouldn’t further build our reputation as a studio and wouldn’t really be that motivating for our team.”
Pitchford benadrukt dat er nooit een officieel voorstel was om een Call of Duty titel te maken en dat hij puur spreekt vanuit de opinie van de studio.
