Jarenlang was de GameSpy Middleware de favoriete multiplayer-software voor vele PC-ontwikkelaars. Zij gebruikten GameSpy om hun servers te regelen en zo de multiplayer-ondersteuning out te sourcen.
De laatste jaren was deze technologie eigendom van IGN dat de servers met veel plezier openhield, maar in augustus werd de software verkocht aan Glu dat nu rustig alle contracten tussen ontwikkelaars en GameSpy rustig doorloopt. Daaruit blijkt dat vele contracten afgelopen en niet verlengd zijn. Reden genoeg voor Glu om plots en zonder waarschuwing de multiplayer van deze games af te sluiten. Slachtoffers zijn onder andere Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2, Microsoft Flight Simulator X, Swat 4, Sniper Elite, Hidden and Dangerous 2, Star Wars: Battlefront, Wings of War, Battlestations: Midway en Lord of the Rings: War of the Ring.
Glu: Neither Namco or Rebellion want to continue support for the game - I'd check with them on why they don't.
Beide partijen wijzen hierbij met de boze vinger naar elkaar, maar het resultaat lijkt duidelijk: de multiplayer van deze games keert nooit terug.
Sniper Elite-developer Rebellion: We have been talking to them since to try and get the servers turned back on. We have been informed that in order to do so would cost us tens of thousands of pounds a year - far in excess of how much we were paying previously. We also do not have the option to take the multiplayer to a different provider. Because the game relies on Glu and Gamespy’s middleware, the entire multiplayer aspect of the game would have to be redeveloped by us, again, at the cost of many tens of thousands of pounds.
