Na vier zeer succesvolle delen Monkey Island bleef het stil rondom de serie van LucasArts. Het lijkt erop dat deze stilte doorbroken is.
De website Rumor Reporter, een website die al eerder goede voorspellingen deed, zegt bericht te hebben gekregen over de komst van een vijfde Monkey Island game. Ze beroepen zich hierbij op het volgende verkregen bericht:

"...the fifth Monkey Island is coming. I know some of the guys who worked on the music compositions for the original PC classics, and they say that it is currently being planned amidst rumors. However, LucasArts has so many things on its belt right now, including a Wii title that has yet to be named. Don't expect any revitalizations of its classic graphic adventures until 2008 at the earliest.
Het bericht is makkelijk af te doen als gerucht, ware het niet dat een World of Monkey Island fansite drie dagen hierna ineens een berichtje kreeg van Steve Purcell, grote man achter Sam & Max. In een e-mail let hij de volgende drie arts zien, erbij zeggend dat de arts geen connectie hebben met een bestaande titel.
