In 1991 bracht de Franse schrijver Bernard Werber het boek Les Fourmis uit, in het Engels omgezet tot Empire of the Ants. In het boek lopen twee verhalen parallel aan elkaar, die van de mens en die van een mierenkolonie in Parijs.
Ontwikkelaar Tower Five heeft het op zich genomen om dit verhaal om te zetten tot een game. Het doel is om je land te verdedigen middels tactische en strategische gevechten in een microscopische wereld.
