Rise to Honor interview

How did the idea of a game starring Jet Li come about?

Wallace: Rise to Honour wasn't born from the idea of creating a videogame starring Jet Li, but rather as a videogame that paid homage to Hong Kong action movies.

The development team is comprised of many HK movie fans and we thought it would be cool if we could get the same level of action that we love from our favourite films, onto the PlayStation 2.

It wasn't until we had completed our first prototype of the game that Jet's manager contacted Sony looking for a videogame opportunity for Jet. It was an amazing coincidence because we were heavily referencing (ripping off) Jet's work as we were designing our fight system.

Can you tell us some of the titles that the team has worked on in the past (before they came together as Foster City Studios)?

Wallace: We are an extremely diverse team from eleven different countries with backgrounds in videogames, feature films, music and advertising. I figured out one time that there is at least one person on the team who has worked on every major console from the NES up to the PlayStation 2.

A few of the titles worked on by team members are: Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Marvel Super Heroes, X-men vs. Street Fighter, Turok and Maximo. Some of the feature film credits of the team include Star Wars (Episodes I and II), Final Fantasy and Shrek.

It's a no-brainer that you'll be going for a very cinematic style - can you explain what kind of presentation and in-game elements you've used to give the game that movie feel?

Wallace: The cinematic feel is accomplished through several different elements: pacing, camera angles, lighting and music all add greatly to the movie feel.

Of course having the motion-captured actions of Jet Li doesn't hurt either.

How involved has Jet Li been in the process of making the game?

Wallace: One of the cool things about working with Jet on this project was that he wanted to be more than just a name on the box. Not only did he spend several weeks with us in the motion capture studio, he also recorded the voice for his character, and worked with us on the story as well.

So what's the background story to the game?

Wallace: Jet's character, Kit Yun is an undercover cop in the Hong Kong police department. The impetus for the story is when he is assigned to infiltrate a crime organization headed by the best friend of his deceased father. The story starts out in Hong Kong, crosses the Pacific into San Francisco and ends back in Hong Kong.

I don't want to give away much more than that, because the story is one of the really cool elements of the game. It plays out like an action movie.

And how would you describe the gameplay? Arcade-adventure, street brawl, components of both?

Wallace: I would describe the game as a classic Jet Li movie with a joystick. Imagine yourself controlling all of the cool things that you typically see Jet doing in his films, and you have Rise to Honour.

How does the combat system work? Can you give examples of how you can use the scenery, and the 360-degree system? Plus, there's armed combat, right?

Wallace: The 360-degree fight system is the core of the game. What we are going for is the ability to take on enemies coming at you from any direction. To control this action we are using the right analogue stick for attacks. Simply slap the stick in a direction and you will get an attack in that direction.

One of the unique points about this system is that we are not reorienting the player's character as they attack. So like Jet in his films, gamers will have the ability to back-fist an enemy attacking from the rear, take out a goon to the side, roundhouse a baddie straight ahead and actually be able to string these multi-directional attacks into combos. It's quite cool!

The controls are fairly simple to use but the fight system also contains a great deal of depth. You can attack, block, counter attack, grab and throw enemies to your heart's content. In addition, the player will also have access to single and double stick weapons as well as some cool gunplay.

What other cool stuff should we be excited about in the title?

Wallace: Our environments are extremely interactive and objects within the environments can frequently be used while in combat. If you see something that looks like it would be fun to crack over an enemy's head... Well, we'd hate to deny you that opportunity.
